Reverse Glass Painting between Folk Art and the Avant-Garde
15.10.2017 - 18.02.2018

The "Blue Rider" artists were fascinated by all anti-academic forms of artistic expression. They especially appreciated traditional Bavarian reverse glass painting with its glowing colours. The exhibition, divided into two "chapters", shows how the technique of reverse glass painting served the artists as a form of inspiration and an artistic field for experimentation.

Two key works from the circle of the "Blue Rider" artists are at the centre of the exhibition: Gabriele Münter's painting in oil, Man in an Armchair (Paul Klee), is displayed in one of the small exhibition rooms as part of a room installation. In this way, an impression of the atmosphere of the world in which the "Blue Rider" group of artists lived, has been recreated.

This is also the subject in the second small exhibition room. Franz Marc's reverse glass painting Landscape with Animals and Rainbow and the embroidered work of his wife, Maria Marc, that is based on it, are presented together in direct comparison for the first time.

The exhibition is part of the "MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus" series "The Blue Land behind Glass". Parallel exhibitions on reverse glass painting are being held at the Buchheim Museum, Bernried, the Schloßmuseum Murnau and the Museum Penzberg - Sammlung Campendonk. www.museenlandschaft-expressionismus.de
