10th anniversary of the new Franz Marc Museum
Jubilee celebration on 17 June 2018

In 2018 the new Franz Marc Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The new museum building in Kochel a. See was opened in June 2008. On 17 June 2018 we will be celebrating the success of the past ten years.

Since its inauguration the Franz Marc Museum has welcomed more than 700,000 visitors who admire the successful symbiosis of art and architecture and take the unique opportunity to enjoy and marvel at the works of Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, August Macke, Gabriele Münter and Alexej Jawlensky in the landscape in which they were created. The large windows in the museum building are an invitation to visitors to create this correlation themselves with the Panorama Room on the second floor - and its view of the lake and the mountains - providing a perfect space for relaxation and contemplation.

The subject 'art and nature' was highlighted in 2017 through the installation of a sculpture by Per Kirkeby in the museum park. This is to be followed up in 2018 with the addition of a monumental sculpture by Tony Cragg that will intensify the fascinating dialogue between the museum and its surrounding parkland.

The exceptional quality of the collection at the Franz Marc Museum that, in addition to Franz Marc and other 'Blue Rider' artists such as Paul Klee, comprises works by members of the 'Brücke' group and post-war abstract artists from Germany and France, has been and is regularly complemented by important works from private lenders, with the museum loaning and lending works from and to major national and international collections of classical modernist art.

Since its opening, 32 exhibitions have been held to date. The thematic focal point has been on Franz Marc within the context of the art of the 20th century, seen together with other artists such as Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz and Per Kirkeby. In addition, the exhibitions are intended to provide an intensive view of the collection and 20th-century art - an aim that is to be continued in our anniversary year as well with two special projects:

Paul Klee. Landscapes
"A short journey into the land of better understanding"
25 February - 10 June 2018

Pictures of Reading - The Reading of Pictures
17 June - 23 September 2018

Both exhibitions in 2018 to mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of the new Franz Marc Museum, provide opportunities to show exceptional works from the 20th century on subjects that are especially closely connected to this era. In this way, the Franz Marc Museum's importance as a major museum for the art of the 20th century that has been established since the opening of the new building, is to be underlined and illustrated. The projects will be accompanied by a number of different events and an innovative educational programme.
