Franz Marc – Landscape with Animals and Rainbow
15 October 2017 – 18 January 2018

Franz Marc made very few reverse glass paintings. His large-format work "Landscape with Animals and Rainbow" of 1911 holds a unique place both in his oeuvre and within the context of the "Blue Rider". This studio exhibition highlights the interesting history behind the creation of this reverse glass painting that Franz Marc himself considered so important that he displayed it at the first "Blue Rider" exhibition in 1911 at Galerie Thanhauser in Munich. Studies and related compositions show the work within the context of other paintings and works on paper created at the same time. The actual intention behind this largeformat work, that was acquired by Herwarth Walden in 1912, remains uncertain to this day.

The exhibition is part of the "MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus" series "The Blue Land behind Glass". Parallel exhibitions on reverse glass painting will be held at the Buchheim Museum, the Schloßmuseum Murnau and the Museum Penzberg – Sammlung Campendonk.
