Franz Marc Museum is nestled in a breathtaking natural setting of lake, moors and mountains. For visitors seeking to explore more of the area after their museum visit, we are delighted to recommend our favourite destinations, places held in deep affection by Franz Marc or that resonate with his art today.
The Felsenweg cliff path to Schlehdorf
The route gets off to a spectacular start, taking hikers along the cliff path above Lake Kochel with stunning views over the lake itself, the encircling mountains and the wild, romantic scenery. The route winds through sunlit woods and past steep cliffs and secluded viewpoints, unfolding nature in all its rich contrasts and tranquillity.
Hikers can continue to the picturesque monastery community of Schlehdorf on the western shore of the lake. Nestled between lake and moorlands and framed by an Alpine panorama, it is a place of peace and history. The Baroque abbey with views over the Herzogstand massif and the gently sloping lakeshore are delightful spots for explore and relax. Hikers and walkers will quickly understand how art and landscape have become so inseparably intertwined in this »blue land«.

Loisach-Lake Kochel Moors
Loisachmoos, an extensive moor landscape of tranquillity and beauty, lies just a few steps away from the museum. Morning mists, distant birdsong: this is a habitat for rare flora and fauna, as well as a refuge for seekers of peace and mindfulness. Around 1900, Swiss painter Jean-Bloé Niestlé – a close friend of Franz Marc – drew inspiration from this remarkable landscape; many of his works depict nature and animals melding and merging in a striking fusion.

Lainbach Falls
Lovers of wilder natural surroundings can follow the river above Kochel to Lainbach Falls. The path runs for around seven kilometres through shady woods, past mossy rocks and breathtaking waterfalls. This place of power, reminiscent of a hidden world of images, served Wassily Kandinsky as a source of artistic inspiration.
