One of Germany’s most breathtaking cultural regions extends between Munich and the Alps. Known as »MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus«, it is a unique alliance of five museums and tourist regions where enjoyment of art is combined with the wonders of nature.

Places like Lake Kochel, Lake Staffel and the Osterseen lakes have always provided rich sources of inspiration for artists. In the early twentieth century, it was the young Expressionists who captured this natural world in rich colours and dynamic lines. Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner were here before they were members of the Dresden-based group »Die Brücke«, and the region exerted a particular attraction for the artists of the »Blue Rider«: Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, Alexej von Jawlensky and Heinrich Campendonk.

Today that period of artistic upheaval can be traced in a unique alliance of museums. The Buchheim Museum der Phantasie on Lake Starnberg contains an outstanding collection of Expressionist art. The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel is intensively dedicated to the eponymous artist’s work. In Murnau, the Schlossmuseum presents intriguing perspectives on the »Blue Rider« and the life of Gabriele Münter. Near the tranquil beauty of the Osterseen lakes, Penzberg Museum examines Campendonk’s role in Expressionism. And finally, the Lenbachhaus in Munich is home to the world’s largest collection of works by the »Blue Rider« artists.

Five museums, five places, one common aim: to bring the history of Expressionism to life in the places where it once began, amid a landscape that wrote art history.
